The Story of Linux

There are tons of Linux distributions out there, and more are definitely being developed right now. I'll be talking about two of most popular Linux distributions today: Kali Linux and Ubuntu.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu was developed by Canonical Ltd., and was first released back in 2004. It's main objective is to provide a user-friendly interface, it's for general use. It's easy to use and with better looks compared to other Linux distributions. It targets normal users who have just taken a step into the world of Linux.

It's architecture is based on it's own unique Ubuntu architecture. Its environment is "Unity" by default, but as always, the user can install a selection of desktop environments. It's only downside is that it is slower than most Linux distributions.

Kali Linux

Kali Linux was developed by a team of developers, under no specific company name, and was first released in 2013. It's main objective is to provide a platform for penetration testing and ethical hacking. It is loaded with a variety of penetration testing and ethical hacking tools, so it's not for normal users. However, it can also be used just like Ubuntu, without the intention of penetration testing nor ethical hacking. It targets (ethical) hackers, students, and some normal users.

It's architecture is based on Linux Kernel (Debian), and it uses GNOME as its default desktop environment. Its speed is also nominal, so it is faster than Ubuntu.

Conclusion

Both Linux distributions are great, open-source and free, but choosing between them is entirely up to the user, and their objective. 

If the user is looking for an easy to use Linux distribution, or switching from Windows or macOS, Ubuntu is probably the best choice compared to Kali Linux, but elementary OS or ZorinOS might be better if it's the user's first time using Linux.

If the user is looking for a powerful, ethical hacking and penetration testing beast, then Kali Linux is the best choice out there.
